KOH KONG: WCS is looking for new employment solutions for people to shift from the illegal turtle trade and fishing, to vegetable farming instead.

WCS provides techniques and training on safe fish farming and vegetable growing to communities living in Sre Ambel district, in order to contribute to improving the livelihoods of local communities.

In addition, the training aims to reduce illegal fishing to manage and conserve fisheries resources, especially to protect the king turtle and crocodile, which are endangered species in Kong Vong in Sihanoukville and Koh Kong.

Som Sitha, the Technical Officer of the Cambodian Wildlife Conservation Association, said that after seeing many challenges with the loss of natural resources, biodiversity and the loss of fishery habitats, WCS continues to provide technical assistance to 5 communities in the salt fields, to ensure that they have the skills to raise fish and grow vegetables for daily consumption and sale for income, which will help to improve family life as well.

He said that the five fishing communities that received technical training on fish farming and vegetable growing include one fishing community in Chamkar Luong commune and Kampong Seila commune, Kampong Seila district in Sihanoukville province, and four other fishing communities in Boeung Preav and Dong Peng commune, Sre Ambel district in Koh Kong province.
